Introductory Seminar FAQs

What is the purpose of the seminar?
This one-day seminar, sponsored by the National Board Resource Center at Stanford University, will provide an introduction to the National Board Certification process (see below for more information) and help teachers start on their portfolio development. Experienced National Board Certified teachers will co-lead the seminar and provide a range of information from the basics of how to apply to an in-depth look at the National Board Teaching Standards and the expectations for the assessment process.
Who should attend the seminar?
- Any teacher interested in learning more about the National Board Certification process
- Any teacher who has already applied for National Board Certification in the 2008 assessment cycle and wants to get a start on their portfolio now (see below for details)
- Any teacher interested in participating in the National Board Certification support program at Stanford in 2008-09 and who has not been a precandidate in our program
When and where will the seminars be offered?
Registration for the Introductory Seminars is open now. These one day seminars are held at Stanford University from 9a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with breakfast provided.

Seminars will be held at the Center for Educational Research at Stanford University, Room 300.

- Introduction to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
- National Board Certified Teachers’ experiences in the certification process
- The vision of accomplished teaching supported by the NBPTS teaching standards
- Application procedures for National Board Certification, updates on financial assistance for the application fee and incentives offered by the state of CA
- A preview of the assessment process – creating a portfolio and preparing for the assessment center exercises
- Examining classroom practice for evidence of the NBPTS teaching standards and ways that using this process can improve your professional practice
- Options for pursuing National Board certification on different timelines
- Suggestions for getting started on your application or working on your portfolio
