The Career Continuum for Teacher Development

Under the career continuum, the professional experience of a teacher would be influenced by the three sets of compatible standards:

• NCATE for teacher preparation and licensing,
• INTASC for authentic assessments of teachers as they enter the profession,
• NBPTS for recognizing accomplished teaching.

Recruitment to a teacher education program	based on academic background and ability to work with children
Preservice preparation	in an NCATE-accredited school of education
Initial intern license	based on INTASC tests of subject matter and teaching knowledge
New teacher induction	1-2 years of early career mentoring and evaluation
Continuing license	based on INTASC performance assessments, including a portfolio of videotaped lessons, written evaluations, and student work
Ongoing professional development	in and out of the classroom
Advanced certification	based on NBPTS performance assessments and examinations
